Politics in Oyo State has always been dynamic, and the current atmosphere is no exception. Governor Seyi Makinde (GSM) has recently adopted a political strategy that is both daring and calculated. His moves are designed to appeal directly to the emotions of the masses, and if the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not respond decisively, the party risks remaining in opposition for many years to come.
When GSM declares that the contest is between APC and the people, many dismiss it as rhetoric. Yet, a closer look reveals that he is deliberately positioning himself as the champion of the masses while painting APC as disconnected. This is not mere talk—it is a deliberate political maneuver, and APC must recognize the danger.
In just a matter of days, GSM has rolled out several initiatives that demonstrate his mastery of political timing. For instance, he ensured that civil servants in Oyo State received their full salaries well before the end of the month, allowing Muslim workers to celebrate Salah with ease. While some may argue that salaries are entitlements, the truth is that paying them earlier than expected creates goodwill. To add to this, he announced an additional ₦10,000 bonus for every worker. Such gestures, though seemingly small, carry immense weight in the hearts of beneficiaries. Once people feel directly touched by a leader’s generosity, convincing them otherwise becomes nearly impossible.
Beyond salaries, GSM extended his largesse to the political class at the grassroots. He distributed brand‑new cars to Vice Chairmen and Councillors across all local governments, and provided electric bikes for Ward Chairmen. These actions are not random—they are carefully calculated to strengthen loyalty and attract those who feel neglected by the opposition. Many individuals who have yet to benefit from APC’s structure may be tempted to cross over to the PDP simply to enjoy these perks.
Furthermore, GSM has been working to mend fences with the Wike camp, signaling a broader coalition within the PDP. If this alliance solidifies, and if GSM continues to spend lavishly on political patronage, the 2027 elections will be fiercely contested. The implication is clear: APC cannot afford complacency.
This is where Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari comes in. He represents the kind of grassroots politician APC desperately needs at this critical juncture. Distinguished and amiable, Senator Buhari has served three consecutive terms in the Senate, a testament to his popularity and acceptance among the people. His track record of programs and initiatives aimed at uplifting communities demonstrates his commitment to service. Unlike many politicians who remain distant from the electorate, Senator Buhari has consistently maintained close ties with the grassroots, making him a natural choice to lead APC back to relevance in Oyo State.
The reality is that GSM’s strategy is built on emotional appeal and immediate gratification. APC must counter this not with empty promises, but with a candidate who embodies credibility, accessibility, and proven service. Senator Buhari fits this description perfectly. His experience, coupled with his ability to connect with ordinary citizens, makes him the most marketable candidate for APC.
If APC fails to rally behind a figure like Senator Buhari, the party risks being overshadowed by GSM’s populist tactics. The opposition cannot afford to sleep while GSM consolidates power through calculated generosity. The masses are being swayed, and only a candidate with genuine grassroots appeal can restore balance.
Therefore, APC in Oyo State must urgently recognize the importance of presenting Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari as its flagbearer. His candidacy offers hope, credibility, and a chance to reclaim the governorship. With his distinguished record and deep connection to the people, he is the antidote to GSM’s emotional politics.
The time for APC to act is now. If the party delays, GSM will continue to set the narrative, and by 2031 APC may still be languishing in opposition. Senator Buhari is not just a candidate; he is the bridge between APC and the people. Supporting him is not only strategic—it is essential for the survival and growth of APC in Oyo State.
