Absence of Ladoja, Alaafin, Soun as Makinde Installs New Obas

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday went ahead with the installation of three Ibadan high chiefs as Obas in absentia, despite the notable absence of key traditional rulers at the ceremony held in Ibadan.

The event, which took place at the historic Mapo Hall, saw the elevation of High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, and High Chief Oyekola Babalola. Alli was conferred with the title of Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadanland, while Adewoyin and Babalola were installed as Ekeerin Balogun and Ekaarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, respectively.

The ceremony proceeded amid controversy, following earlier communication from the palace of the Olubadan indicating that the affected chiefs had requested a deferment due to their inability to attend the event.

Despite the appeal, the state government maintained its position, stressing the need for continuity in traditional administrative processes. Government officials present at the ceremony reiterated that due process had been followed and that the installations were in line with existing chieftaincy declarations.

Representing the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, was the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, alongside some members of the Olubadan-in-Council.

However, the absence of other prominent traditional rulers drew attention. These included the Olubadan himself, Rashidi Ladoja, the Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Ghandi Olaoye.

Observers say the development underscores ongoing tensions within traditional and administrative structures in the state, particularly regarding the evolving status and recognition of Ibadan high chiefs.

The event nonetheless attracted dignitaries, government officials, and traditional leaders, reflecting the state government’s resolve to carry out the installations as scheduled despite the high-profile absences.
