Women in the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have called for the immediate implementation of the 35 percent affirmative action policy in elective positions, as part of efforts to boost female participation in governance.
The demand was made during a gathering of the partyโs women wing, where members expressed determination to play a more active role in Nigeriaโs political landscape, particularly ahead of future general elections.
The women, led by the state APC Women Leader, Felicia Opatunde, said they are no longer willing to be sidelined in political processes. They stressed their resolve to break longstanding barriers and shatter the โglass ceilingโ that has limited womenโs representation in leadership.
According to Opatunde, the 35 percent affirmative action policy is critical to ensuring inclusivity and fairness in the political system. She noted that women have consistently contributed to party growth and electoral success, and therefore deserve greater representation in decision-making roles.
The group also called on party leaders to support their cause, emphasizing that empowering women politically would strengthen the party and deepen democratic values.
They further pledged to mobilize and make their voices heard, not only within the party but across the broader political space in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Oyo State APC Chairman, Moses Alake Adeyemo, acknowledged the role of women in the party and assured them of continued engagement with leadership on their demands.
The development reflects a growing push among Nigerian women to secure more representation in politics, as advocacy for gender equality gains momentum nationwide.
The APC women in Oyo State reaffirmed their commitment to claiming their space and ensuring that the affirmative action policy moves from rhetoric to reality.
