Delta APC Applauds EFCC’s Arrest of Okowa, Calls it a Positive Step in Fight Against Corruption

The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed support for the recent arrest of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, calling it a significant move in the ongoing battle against corruption in Nigeria.

In a statement issued shortly after news of Okowa’s arrest broke, the APC commended the current administration’s commitment to addressing corruption and financial mismanagement at both the state and national levels.

Okowa, who served as Delta State Governor from 2015 to 2023, was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of embezzlement and the mismanagement of public funds during his tenure. The charges reportedly relate to dubious financial dealings and questionable contracts awarded during his time in office.

The statement, signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo Esq., emphasized that Okowa’s arrest highlights the federal government’s determination to tackle financial misconduct and ensure accountability. It urged the EFCC to continue its thorough investigation into the activities of other former state governors and public officials.

“We in the APC wholeheartedly support the arrest of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who oversaw one of the most egregious cases of financial recklessness and mismanagement in Delta State’s history,” the statement read. The party accused Okowa of diverting large sums of state funds for personal gain, including establishing a bank, funding his failed presidential bid, and manipulating the political system to impose his preferred successor on the people of Delta, despite public demand for change.

The APC further emphasized that the arrest serves as a strong reminder that no public official, regardless of their status or political affiliation, is above the law. “The era of impunity is over,” the statement declared, urging continued vigilance in the fight against corruption. “We are encouraged by the bold steps being taken by the administration in ensuring that public funds are used for the welfare of the people and not for personal enrichment.”
