In light of the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State, former President Goodluck Jonathan has issued a stern warning to political actors, urging them to consider the broader implications of their actions on national security. Jonathan expressed grave concern over recent political developments in the state, calling on all stakeholders to uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The former President described the political crisis in Rivers State as a serious threat to democracy and emphasized the importance of conducting elections in a peaceful and transparent manner. “Elections are the cornerstone of democracy because they are the primary source of legitimacy. This process renews the faith of citizens in their country as it affords them the opportunity to have a say on who governs them,” Jonathan stated.
Jonathan urged all state institutions, particularly security agencies, to act responsibly and avoid actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order. “Rivers State represents the gateway to the Niger Delta, and any threat to peace in the state could have huge security implications for the region,” he warned.
Drawing parallels to the political crisis of the Old Western Region, the former President urged all political actors to exercise caution and patriotism in their pursuit of political ambitions. He called on the National Judicial Commission (NJC) to intervene and address the proliferation of conflicting court orders, warning that this trend could erode public confidence in the judiciary and undermine democratic governance.
“The political situation in Rivers State mirrors our past, and I, therefore, warn that Rivers should not be used as a crystal that will form the block that collapses our democracy,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan concluded by urging all stakeholders, including state institutions, the police, and the judiciary, to prioritize public interest and promote peace, justice, and equality to ensure the stability and progress of Nigeria’s democratic process.
