The Oyo State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the governorship ambition of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, pledging to galvanize support for his candidacy across all 33 local government areas of the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
The endorsement followed a motion moved on the floor of the House during it’s Wednesday’s plenary sitting by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi, who represents Ona-Ara State Constituency.
Lawmakers who spoke included Honorables Babajide Gabriel (Ibadan North II, Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso south), Lekan Abiola (Akinyele I), Olusola Owolabi (Ibadan North East II), Rahman Olorunpoto (Oyo East/west), Gbenga Oyekola (Atiba),
The motion, which received unanimous backing from lawmakers, underpinned what the Assembly described as Ogundoyin’s consistent loyalty to Governor Seyi Makinde and his unfettered commitment to the ideals of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In their deliberations, members of the Assembly portrayed the Speaker as a steady hand in the state’s political landscape, while emphasizing his role in fostering unity within the legislature and maintaining a productive working relationship with the executive arm of government.
Hon. Fadeyi, while presenting the motion, noted that Ogundoyin’s leadership qualities and political experience have positioned him as a credible contender capable of sustaining the developmental strides recorded in the state under the leadership of governor Seyi Makinde.
According to him, “The Speaker has demonstrated uncommon loyalty, not just to the present administration, but to the party as a whole.
“His maturity in handling legislative affairs as well as its dynamics and his understanding of governance at both state and national levels stand him out.”
Other lawmakers, in their separate contributions, described Ogundoyin as a stabilizing force whose leadership has ensured cohesion within the Assembly, even in moments of political tension.
They stressed that his depth of experience, coupled with his grassroots connection, makes him a strong candidate with broad appeal across the state.
The lawmakers equally explained that the speaker has earned his place as a potential governor having displayed the expected capacity and visionary leadership as leader of the state legislature, maintaining balance and stability among the three arms of government.
The legislators further highlighted his knowledge of regional dynamics and national political structures, arguing that such exposure would be critical in navigating the complexities of governance if elected as governor.
They also pointed to his track record as Speaker and chairman, Conference of Speakers of the 36 state legislatures particularly in promoting legislative independence while sustaining synergy with the executive, as evidence of his capacity to lead the state effectively.
They maintained that the state can not afford any form of trial and error under a new person not grounded in the system especially with the requisite knowledge of regional and national political dynamics.
In a show of solidarity, the Assembly resolved to mobilize political support for Ogundoyin across the 33 local government areas.
The endorsement, according to the lawmakers, was targeted at sending a message to the public that Oyo state must move beyond petty politics as a pacesetter states to embrace tested hands and qualitative leadership capable of sustaining the gains of good governance already recorded.
In his brief remarks, said, “I do not take your support for granted. I promise that by God’s grace, if and when I become the governor, I’ll consolidate and build on what our leader has done to move the state to the next level and won’t let the legislature down.”
