More Trouble for Nasir El-rufai as ICPC traced multi billion naira property linked to him in Egypt

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reportedly uncovered a multimillion dollar apartments linked to embattled former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-rufai.

TheCable reports that the multimillion dollar assets were discovered by ICPC in its ongoing investigation of Nasir El-rufai’s tenure as in Kaduna State. The reports claims that the alleged assets linked to Nasir El-rufai are located in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, comprising three villas and six apartment all in choice, highbrow locations in Cairo and worth between $1,000,000 to $1300000 each.

Also, theCable cites an unnamed source in the ICPC who alleged that the assets in question were purchased by Nasir El-rufai within 2021 and 2023 timeframe–during his second tenure in Kaduna State.

Despite his insistence of being innocent of allegation of corruption against him, Nasir Elrufai has been in ICPC custody for more than two weeks.

In 2024, the Kaduna State House of Assembly accused Nasir El-rufai of misappropriating 432 million naira during his governorship administration from 2019 to 2023. This allegation is presumably the reason he is being held by the Nigeria’s anti-graft agency.

Civil society groups and notable Nigerians have called on the ICPC to release Nasir El-rufai or prosecute him amid his continued detention.

The commission had claimed that Nasir El-rufai was not being held unconstitutionally, disclosing that it had secured a remand order from Magistrate court in Bwari Area of Abuja which authorized the commission to hold Nasir El-rufai in its custody for two necessary for the commission’s ongoing investigation.

However, the validity of the alleged remand order by Magistrate court in Bwari expired on 5th of March while the commission continues to hold Nasir El-rufai without prosecuting him or releasing him.

The commission also alleges that Nasir El-rufai is uncooperative–has refused to answer questions during interviews with the agents of the commission, citing his constitutional right to remain silent.

Also, the family of Nasir El-rufai has on two different occasions, appealed to the commission to either release Nasir El-rufai or prosecute him, claiming that the former governor’s fundamental rights are being violated.
