No Anointed Candidates:Lagos APC Adopts Direct Primaries for 2027, Drops Consensus Model

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has announced a major shift in its candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections, adopting direct primaries as its primary method while downplaying the role of consensus arrangements, ITV Online confirms

The announcement was made by the Lagos State APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, following the successful conclusion of the party’s national convention, which produced new officers across its structures.

In a statement released to party members, Ojelabi said the decision aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Now that the convention is over, our main focus is the process of electing candidates who will fly our party’s flag in the next election,” Ojelabi stated, emphasizing that direct primaries would serve as the first option for selecting candidates.

He added, however, that consensus arrangements would still be considered where they are “freely reached and popularly accepted by all interests,” signaling a hybrid approach to candidate emergence.

In a notable departure from past practices, the party chairman stressed that no aspirant has been endorsed for any position. “All available positions are open for contest as the party has no anointed candidate for any seat,” he said, urging interested members to participate in the process in accordance with the law.

Ojelabi also made it clear that nomination and administrative fees paid by aspirants would not be refunded under any circumstances, a move likely to influence the number of contestants.

The Lagos APC further pledged to ensure a level playing field, promising a “free, fair and transparent” process that reflects the will of party members across constituencies.

Highlighting inclusivity, the party said special consideration would be given to female aspirants with strong grassroots support, as part of efforts to improve gender representation within its ranks.

Political analysts say the adoption of direct primaries could significantly reshape internal party dynamics in Lagos, widening participation while potentially increasing competition among aspirants.

The APC leadership also called for discipline and mutual respect among members as it awaits detailed guidelines from its national body.

“With our commitment to internal democracy, we urge all members to conduct themselves with decorum and dignity throughout the process,” Ojelabi said.

The move positions Lagos, a key political stronghold, at the forefront of internal reforms within the ruling party as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections.
