NSA Urges to Tighten Oversight of Defence Procurement Amid Rising Troop Casualties

Stakeholders have called on the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to strengthen its supervisory role over defence procurement processes at the Defence Headquarters to ensure that only standard, high-quality military equipment is supplied to Nigeria’s armed forces.

The call follows growing concerns over the recurring loss of military personnel in operations against terrorist groups, with security observers linking some casualties to inadequate or substandard weapons and operational equipment.
According to analysts, insurgent groups operating in parts of the country are increasingly deploying more sophisticated arms, raising concerns about the preparedness and protection of frontline troops.

Personnel deployed across various theatres of operation continue to risk their lives in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity and the protection of civilians. Security stakeholders insist that troops must be adequately equipped with modern weaponry, protective gear, intelligence systems, and reliable logistical support to effectively carry out their mandate.

Experts have also renewed calls for greater transparency, accountability, and independent oversight in the defence procurement chain, stressing that every budgetary allocation to the sector should directly enhance combat readiness and troop safety.

“The lives of our soldiers must never be compromised by procurement lapses,” a security analyst said, noting that the country has a responsibility to provide its armed forces with the resources needed to confront terrorism and other security threats decisively.

The development has further intensified demands for reforms in Nigeria’s defence acquisition procedures in line with global best practices, particularly regarding equipment quality, value for money, and operational effectiveness.
