The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),has issued a clarion call for increased public-private cooperation, identifying the intersection of climate change and national insecurity as the next great frontier for the nation’s safety architecture.
Speaking at the 2026 International Civil Defence Day celebrations in the Oyo State capital, State Commandant Augustine Padonu emphasized that the agency’s mission has evolved beyond simple asset protection to managing complex environmental risks that fuel social instability.
In a notable show of inter-agency solidarity, the Oyo State Police Command lauded the NSCDC’s growing footprint. Representing Police Commissioner ,Femi Haruna, DSP Ekanem Usen, highlighted the Corps’ specific success in stabilizing regions that were previously “non-governing spaces.”
”The synergy we see today isn’t just for show,” Usen stated. “The NSCDC has stepped into the gaps, reclaiming territories that were once vacuumed of authority, ensuring that the law reaches the farthest corners of the state.”
The festivities were tempered by a sobering “charge to action” from the traditional institution. A prominent Monarch, speaking at the event, urged a tactical evolution in the fight against banditry.
While acknowledging the progress made, the traditional ruler insisted that the shifting nature of internal threats requires the NSCDC and its sister agencies to stay two steps ahead of “peace-threatening factors” through superior intelligence and modernized field tactics.
Key Highlights from the Commemoration
Climate & Security: Discussion on how environmental degradation drives migration and communal clashes.
Inter-agency Synergy: Public commitment from the Nigerian Police Force to continue joint operations with the Corps.
A direct plea for citizens to act as the “eyes and ears” of the agency to mitigate social risks.
“We cannot be everywhere at once, but the citizens are. To mitigate the impacts of climate change and the insecurity it breeds, we need every Nigerian to see themselves as a stakeholder in this safety project.”
