Obasa removed, reinstated, Lagos legislators rejoiced|Sly Edaghese

SIR: Fela called that Zombie! That describes who the Lagos State lawmakers are: Zombies. The Lagos State House of Assembly is in disarray. The legislators overwhelmingly impeached Mudashiru Obasa, who had been the Speaker for 10 years, and replaced him with his deputy, Mojisola Meranda.

They carried placards and insulted Obasa, calling him all sorts of names. The governor backed them up, and the whole house rejoiced at having a new and vibrant Speaker: Mojisola Lasbat Meranda!

Then came President Bola Tinubu, who claimed he wasn’t aware of the plot to remove Obasa. Obasa is a key figure in Tinubu’s re-election calculations, controlling Agege, the largest local government area with the most voters – crucial for the President’s needs in 2027. Tinubu asked that Obasa be brought back to his seat.

Interestingly, Obasa has ambitions to become the next governor of Lagos, just like Tinubu’s son, Seyi. It seems Tinubu prioritises his own survival over his son’s gubernatorial aspirations. Many are praising the Lagos State political leaders for this dramatic turn of events, but as for me, I weep for Lagos State.
