The immediate past Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin.
Engineer Olaniyan described the passing of the highly revered monarch as a monumental loss not only to Ibadanland but also to Oyo State and the entire Yoruba race. He noted that Oba Olakulehin’s reign, though brief, was marked by dignity, wisdom, and fatherly leadership.
This was contained in a condolence message personally signed by Engineer Olaniyan and made available to newsmen in Ibadan through his Personal Assistant, Comrade Adesola Yakub Tasolo.
According to him, the late Olubadan represented a unique blend of traditional authority and modern experience, drawing from his extensive background as an industrialist, retired military officer, and former member of the House of Representatives.
The Oke-Ogun frontline politician recalled that Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland on July 12, 2024, succeeding the late Oba Lekan Balogun. His enthronement marked a historic moment for the ancient city, signifying one of the most peaceful and orderly transitions in the history of the revered stool.
Born on July 5, 1935, in Ibadan, the late monarch led a distinguished life in both public service and private enterprise. His wealth of knowledge, leadership qualities, and unwavering commitment to community development earned him widespread admiration and respect.
Oba Olakulehin passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 90—just two days after his birthday and nearly one year into his reign. Olaniyan stated that his passing has created a deep vacuum that will be difficult to fill.
The APC chieftain urged the people of Ibadanland and the entire Oyo State to take solace in the impactful life the late monarch lived and the rich legacies he left behind. He also called for unity among the kingmakers and members of the traditional council as the process of selecting the next Olubadan begins.
Engineer Olaniyan extended his heartfelt condolences to the Olubadan-in-Council, the Ibadan traditional institution, and the royal family. He prayed that Almighty Allah grant the departed royal father eternal rest and Aljanah Firdaus.
