Gunmen have invaded a parish of the Celestial Church of Christ in Uso, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, abducting six worshippers during an early-morning service.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at about 12:50a.m, according to police authorities.
The abduction comes barely four days after assailants kidnapped a couple at Ilu-Abo community in Akure North LGA, heightening concerns over rising insecurity in the state since the beginning of the year.
Jimoh Abayomi, police public relations officer in the state, said operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene following a distress call.
“Upon receiving the report, operatives of the command, in collaboration with the Nigerian army and local vigilante groups, mobilised to the scene and commenced coordinated rescue operations,” he said.
Abayomi disclosed that one of the abducted worshippers has since been rescued, while a suspect linked to the incident has been arrested.
“As a result of sustained joint efforts, one of the kidnapped victims has been successfully rescued. Additionally, one suspect linked to the incident has been arrested and has made useful statements that are assisting ongoing investigations,” he stated.
He assured residents that security operations were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and apprehend all perpetrators.
“Security operations are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the apprehension of all perpetrators involved,” he added.
The police urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in their efforts.
