Opinion: Road to Nowhere: Saki’s Reckless Driving Epidemic|Salam Abdrahman

The recent tragic incident along Polytechnic Road in Saki, which claimed the life of Comrade Ogunleye Samuel, is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving in Saki community. According to eyewitnesses, a hit-and-run incident involving “Yahoo boys” driving recklessly led to the unfortunate demise of this young life, leaving a family in grief and a community in shock.

This incident is not an isolated case, but rather a symptom of a broader problem. The roads in Saki have become a battleground, where speed demons rule and pedestrians pray for mercy. The Polytechnic Road, in particular, has earned a notorious reputation for reckless driving, and it’s only a matter of time before another tragedy strikes

This tragedy highlights a growing concern that demands immediate attention from both the government and the populace. The Polytechnic Road has become a hotspot for such incidents, largely due to the high speed and lack of consideration for other road users by some drivers.

The question is, what are we waiting for? When will the government take decisive action to tame the speedsters and hold them accountable? The people of Saki deserve better than to live in fear of reckless drivers. We need increased police presence, speed cameras, and a robust road safety campaign to educate drivers and pedestrians alike.

The government must take concrete steps to address this issue. Firstly, there is a need for increased police presence and surveillance along this road to monitor and apprehend reckless drivers. Additionally, the installation of speed cameras and implementation of speed limits can serve as a deterrent to drivers who prioritize speed over safety.

Government action alone is not enough. The community must also take ownership of this problem. We must report reckless drivers, support law enforcement, and promote a culture of road safety. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our community to demand better.

Moreover, public awareness campaigns on road safety can educate both drivers and pedestrians on the importance of responsible behavior on the roads. Community leaders and local organizations can play a pivotal role in promoting these initiatives and fostering a culture of safety and respect.

As citizens, we also have a role to play. We must report reckless driving incidents and support law enforcement efforts to ensure that those who endanger lives are held accountable. Furthermore, promoting a sense of responsibility among drivers, especially the youth, can go a long way in preventing such tragedies.

The loss of Comrade Ogunleye Samuel, a prominent member of Okeogun Solidarity Forum and Secretary to the Bethel Church in Saki and civil servant is a wake-up call. Let’s seize this moment to reclaim our roads and ensure that no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to reckless driving. The road to safety starts here, and it’s time we take the first step.

In conclusion, the loss of Comrade Ogunleye Samuel should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. By working together, we can make our roads safer and prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future. The government must act swiftly, and the community must remain vigilant. Only through collective effort can we ensure that our roads are safe for everyone.
