As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State gears up for the 2027 elections, political watchers are closely monitoring the race to succeed Seyi Makinde. Several aspirants have begun positioning themselves for the party’s gubernatorial ticket, setting the stage for a highly competitive contest, ITV Online can exclusively report.
Among the leading contenders is Adebo Ogundoyin, the current Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly. Known for his youth, energy, and growing statewide political structure, Ogundoyin has been steadily garnering endorsements from party stakeholders, making him an early front-runner.
Close behind is Segun Ogunwuyi, whose proximity to Governor Makinde positions him as the “continuity candidate.” Ogunwuyi’s executive experience and insider influence give him a strong footing, though his visibility at the grassroots level remains limited.
Debo Akande also remains a notable aspirant, appealing to party elites and policy-minded voters. With a strong voice in governance and economic issues, Akande is respected for his intellectual depth, but analysts note that his challenge lies in translating expertise into a broad political structure capable of winning a state-wide election.
Other aspirants include Adedeji Olajide, whose solid Ibadan base provides a credible platform; Bimbo Adekanmbi, recognized within party circles but with limited statewide traction; Nureni Adeniran, whose administrative experience is yet to translate into political momentum; and Debo Adejumobi and Beulah Adeoye, who remain largely under the radar in the contest.
Political analysts warn that while early momentum favors Ogundoyin and Ogunwuyi, the race is far from settled. Zoning considerations, party endorsements, grassroots mobilization, and the eventual influence of Governor Makinde will likely determine the outcome.
“The PDP succession race in Oyo is not just about individual ambition; it’s about strategy, structure, and the ability to bring together various factions within the party,” said a senior party official who asked not to be named. “Expect the dynamics to shift as we get closer to the primaries.”
With 2027 approaching, the contest for the PDP gubernatorial ticket in Oyo State is set to intensify, as aspirants step up campaigns, form alliances, and mobilize support across the state.
