As we reflect on the life and legacy of Professor Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa, it becomes clear that his impact on Nigeria’s education system and national development is immeasurable. Born on September 23, 1923, in Isale Eko, Lagos State, Fafunwa’s journey was marked by a passion for education, a commitment to excellence, and a dedication to nation-building.

Fafunwa’s early life was shaped by his family’s relocation to Jebba, Niger State, where his father, Pa Sanusi Giwa Fafunwa, engaged in fishing, and his mother, Madam Morinatu Fafunwa, managed a petty trading business. Young Aliu Fafunwa assisted his parents in these endeavors, developing a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit.

Fafunwa’s academic prowess was evident from an early age. He attended Muslim Training School and Ahmadiyya Talimul School in Lagos for his primary education (1932-1936) and later CMS Grammar School, Lagos, for his secondary education (1937-1943). His thirst for knowledge led him to the United States, where he earned three degrees from US universities in Social Science, English Education, and Higher Education Administration.

Fafunwa’s contributions to education are multifaceted. He advocated for mother-tongue education, introducing primary science programs, and establishing various language institutions. His commitment to education was not limited to the classroom; he also served as the Federal Minister of Education and Youth Development from 1990 to 1992, leading to notable policy reforms, decentralization of examinations, and establishment of key institutions.

Some of his notable publications include “A History of Nigerian Higher Education,” “History of Education in Nigeria,” “New Perspectives in African Education,” and “Education in Mother Tongue: The Ife Primary Education Research Project.”

Fafunwa’s legacy extends beyond education. He was a devout Muslim who believed that Islam was built on a foundation of knowledge. He remained involved in Islamic initiatives impacting Nigerian Muslims until his passing. He was a sound member of the Shooting stars (1948) Islamic club and the Committee on Muslim Islamic Schools (COMIS) located in Iwo town, Osun State. Fafunwa’s Muslim identity emerged when he became Minister of Education, revealing his Muslim name “Aliu.”

Fafunwa’s commitment to Islamic education and community development led to his involvement in various organizations. He served as president of the Jama’atu Islamiyyah Society and chairman of its board of trustees. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Muslim Association of Nigeria (MAN) in 1959 and later became its president, remaining a vital part of its board of trustees until his passing. Fafunwa was also instrumental in the formation of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) in 2008, where he played a key role and was unanimously elected as its first president-general, a position he held until his demise.

Throughout his illustrious career, Fafunwa received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to education and national development. He was the first Nigerian to earn a Ph.D. in Education in 1955. His international recognition includes the Medal for Distinguished Service in Education and the Franklin Book Award. He also received honorary degrees from several Nigerian universities, including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Lagos State University.
