Former ADC presidential candidate Professor Pat Utomi has announced he’s done with executive office, citing his 70th birthday, and has urged Atiku Abubakar to step aside for a younger candidate, citing the need for Africa to move away from gerontocracy.
In an exclusive interview with INDEPENDENT, Utomi emphasized the importance of democracy and accountability, stating that Nigeria’s fundamental problem is that democracy is dying due to a lack of representation and accountability.
On the 2027, elections, Utomi said it’s not about removing one person and replacing another, but about reforming the system to address Nigeria’s problems.
On Atiku’s presidential ambition, Utomi said Atiku is a good man who means well for Nigeria, but believes he should step aside for a younger candidate, citing the need for Africa to move away from gerontocracy.
Utomi also criticized Nigeria’s tax reform policy, stating that it must begin with electoral and representation reform, and emphasized the importance of accountability and representation.
He also shared his views on corruption, stating that Nigeria’s weak institutions and lack of accountability have contributed to corruption, and that authentic leaders are needed to address the issue.
On INEC’s ability to deliver a credible election in 2027, Utomi expressed skepticism, stating that many officials will face consequences for their actions in past elections.
