The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, has seized Cannabis sativa and other prohibited goods with a total value of over N900m in Oyo State.
The command also intercepted a pistol, magazines, detonating cords, hazardous chemicals, including mercury, and materials bearing the insignia of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Acting Area Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller Wale Adewole, disclosed this in Ibadan while briefing journalists on the command’s anti-smuggling activities in August.
Adewole said the seizures included 2,440 wraps of Cannabis sativa, more than 2,000 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 1,150 used tyres and 101 used compressors.
He further listed 48 packs of Tramadol, used clothing and shoes, 450 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit, foreign vegetable oil, foreign sugar, used vehicles and other prohibited items among the goods intercepted.
The Customs boss said the command also seized 573 Nigeria Police Force crests and 92 yards of police camouflage uniform fabric.
The interception of the police-related materials, firearms, detonating cords and illicit drugs, according to stakeholders at the briefing, had implications for national security.
Speaking at the event, the DC Operations and Training of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Oyo State Command, Abdul Maiyaki, and the State Coordinator of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, Mayowa Audu, also addressed the gathering.
The Customs command said it would continue to intensify its anti-smuggling operations to curb the movement of prohibited goods and protect the nation’s economy and security.
