Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called for intensified efforts to rescue victims of the May 16, 2026 kidnapping incidents in Borno State and Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Makinde made the call on Tuesday while receiving the report of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry into the Oriire kidnapping incident at the Executive Chamber, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
The governor, who expressed sympathy with the victims and their families, said the incident was a major test of the security architecture expected to protect citizens across the country.
He urged security agencies and other relevant authorities to sustain efforts aimed at securing the release of the kidnapped victims, stressing the need for stronger measures to prevent a recurrence.
Makinde also commended the Judicial Commission of Enquiry, chaired by Professor Mojeed Owoade, for what he described as its rigorous work in investigating the circumstances surrounding the Oriire incident.
He said his administration remained committed to creating a safe and conducive environment for education and other sectors, noting that security was essential to achieving shared democratic prosperity.
Recall that 46 students and six teachers were abducted at Yawota-Esinle-Yawota community in Oriire Local Government Area on May 16, 2026.
The incident occurred alongside the abduction of more than 40 persons in Borno State on the same day.
Speaking on the commission’s report, Prof. Owoade said the panel undertook a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Oriire incident and its wider implications for security and public safety.
