Senator Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli, popularly known as BSA, has emerged as one of Oyo State’s most experienced political figures, with a career spanning over three decades in public service, governance, and legislative leadership.
A lawyer by profession and a politician by calling, Alli currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly. His rise through the ranks of public service reflects a long-standing commitment to leadership and the development of Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
Born and raised in Ibadan, Alli began his educational journey at Progress Day School, Alaadorin, Isale Osi, Ibadan. He later pursued higher education in law, earning a Master’s degree and subsequently obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Legislative and Strategic Studies from the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State.
His political career gained momentum between December 1991 and November 1993 when he became the first democratically elected Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, the most populous local government area in Oyo State at the time.
In 1996, at the age of 33, Alli was elected to represent Oyo South Senatorial District under the platform of the now-defunct United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), marking his entry into national politics.
His leadership qualities continued to earn him recognition within political circles. Between September and November 1999, he served as the Oyo State Secretary and Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 2003, former Governor Rashidi Ladoja appointed him Secretary to the Oyo State Government, a position he held with distinction. Two years later, in 2005, he was elevated to the office of Chief of Staff to the Governor.
Beyond politics, Alli made significant contributions to economic development. In 2011, he was appointed Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, the investment arm jointly owned by the South-West states. During his tenure, the company recorded notable achievements, including the development of Heritage Mall and Cocoa Mall in Ibadan, projects widely regarded as major commercial landmarks in the state.
In the 2023 general elections, Alli secured victory as Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Since his inauguration, he has played key roles in the Senate, serving as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff.
His influence has also extended beyond Nigeria’s borders. In 2024, he was inaugurated as a member of the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Widely regarded as a seasoned administrator, accomplished legislator, and grassroots politician, Senator Alli remains a prominent figure in Oyo State’s political landscape. As a leading figure within the APC, his supporters believe his wealth of experience in governance, legislation, and economic management positions him as a key player in the future development of the Pacesetter State.
