The Okere of Sakiland, Oba Dr. Surv. Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Oyedepo III, has expressed sadness over the death of renowned Yoruba traditional oral artist and legendary Ijala poet, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, who died on Monday at the age of 86.
The monarch described the death of the Saki-born cultural icon as a great loss to Sakiland, Oke-Ogun and the Yoruba cultural community, saying Ogundepo would be greatly missed.
He said the late poet made significant contributions to the development and promotion of Sakiland through his artistic and cultural activities.
Kabiyesi Okere particularly recalled Ogundepo’s contribution to the identity and cultural heritage of Saki, noting that he was the composer of the Saki Anthem.
He described the deceased as a distinguished custodian of Yoruba cultural heritage whose talent and dedication helped preserve Ijala poetry for successive generations.
Kabiyesi Okere prayed to God to grant the deceased eternal rest and admit his soul into Al-Jannah Firdaus.
He also extended his condolences to the family, friends, associates and the people of Sakiland, urging them to take solace in the enduring legacy left behind by the late cultural icon.
