The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly Reconciliation Committee in Oyo State has recommended transparent party primaries, adherence to zoning arrangements and the inclusion of aspirants who lost previous primaries in the party’s political activities.
The committee said the measures were necessary to promote unity, internal democracy, fairness and inclusiveness within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The committee, chaired by Akin Oke and co-chaired by Niran Adeyoju, made the recommendations after concluding reconciliation meetings with party stakeholders across the federal constituencies and senatorial districts in the state.
A major recommendation of the committee was the institutionalisation of rotational candidacy in local governments and political zones where established zoning arrangements exist.
The committee said respecting existing rotational arrangements would promote equity and fairness among party members and reduce tensions arising from competition for political offices.
It also recommended that deserving aspirants who contested and lost party primaries should not be sidelined, but considered for political appointments, campaign responsibilities, advisory roles, party assignments and other strategic positions within the party and government.
The committee stressed the need for greater transparency in the conduct of party primaries, saying members must have confidence in the processes through which candidates emerge.
The recommendations followed consultations with stakeholders across the state as part of efforts to resolve grievances and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The committee’s position is coming amid concerns over internal divisions within the Oyo APC and the need to reconcile competing interests ahead of the elections.
It maintained that a united and inclusive APC would be better positioned to challenge its political opponents and improve its electoral fortunes in the state.
The committee urged party leaders, aspirants and other stakeholders to embrace reconciliation, respect existing agreements and prioritise the collective interest of the party above individual ambitions.
