There is no argument about the constitutional qualifications or prerequisites for occupying a seat in the Senate. However, a well-established career in the civil service, rising through the ranks to the highest level of the administrative ladder, is a testament to a distinguished career in public service and clear preparedness for the rigorous responsibilities of a senator.
Leadership is not measured exclusively by the number of years spent in any position. It is measured by experience, competence, exposure, sound judgement, institutional understanding and the ability to deliver results.
Mrs Hannah Olawumi Ogunesan’s professional journey represents a wealth of experience. As a seasoned administrator and former Head of Service of Oyo State, she has built a distinguished career around understanding, managing and coordinating the machinery of government.
Let us state a more fundamental question here: What should matter most to the people of Oyo North when considering the 3Cs — Competence, Capacity and Character? It is the need for competent hands with a lifetime of professional experience and a sound understanding of how government works, how policies are formulated, how institutions function and how public resources are managed.
A successful career in public administration demands the ability to work with and understand the three arms of government: the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary. Such exposure provides a broader understanding of governance, institutional relationships, constitutional responsibilities and public policy implementation.
A senator is not merely a debater or a sponsor of motions. The office demands strategic thinking, legislative judgement, policy formulation, effective oversight, negotiation, institutional knowledge and the ability to connect national decisions with the real needs of constituents.
The Senate is not a reward for political familiarity. It should be an institution where competence, character, intellectual depth, experience and the capacity to deliver matter.
Mrs Hannah Olawumi Ogunesan should be judged by the wealth of experience, administrative competence and institutional knowledge she has acquired throughout her career.
Oyo North deserves someone who understands how to make government work, how to influence policy and how to translate governance experience into meaningful development.
The question for Oyo North in 2027 should be who possesses the depth of experience, capacity, competence and vision to represent the people effectively.
MRS HANNAH OLAWUMI OGUNESAN: EXPERIENCE BEYOND POLITICS, CAPACITY BEYOND TITLES, LEADERSHIP BEYOND THE LEGISLATURE!
