The Okere of Sakiland, Oba Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Oyedepo III, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, peace, and national development.
In a goodwill message released by the Palace Media on Friday, the revered monarch joined millions of Nigerians in commemorating the nation’s democratic journey, describing Democracy Day as a significant reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought tirelessly for democratic governance in the country.
Oba Oyedepo noted that although democracy may not be without its challenges, it remains the most viable system of government for fostering inclusiveness, accountability, and sustainable development.
The monarch called on Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process and work collectively towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous nation. He stressed that the country’s progress depends largely on the commitment of its citizens to uphold democratic values and support efforts aimed at strengthening national institutions.
According to the royal father, Democracy Day offers an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s achievements and challenges while inspiring renewed determination to advance the cause of good governance and socio-economic development.
He also paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly those who made immense sacrifices to ensure the country’s return to civil rule, noting that their contributions should continue to inspire present and future generations.
Oba Oyedepo further urged Nigerian youths to take greater interest in governance and nation-building, emphasizing that their energy, innovation, and numerical strength remain critical to the country’s future.
“As we celebrate another Democracy Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity, and democratic principles. Together, we can build a nation that reflects the aspirations and dreams of all Nigerians,” the monarch stated.
The traditional ruler prayed for continued peace, stability, and prosperity across the country and wished all Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration.
