Okeogun Kidnapping: Escaped Victim’s Identification Leads to Suspect’s Arrest

An escaped kidnapping victim has reportedly identified one of his alleged abductors, leading to the arrest of a suspect by local security operatives in Baasi, Atisbo Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The suspect, identified as Dogo of Gaa Alhaji in Baasi, was apprehended during a joint security operation involving members of the local vigilante group, the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, Iru Ekun and local hunters.

The arrest followed the victim’s reported escape from the kidnappers’ hideout after spending several days in captivity.

According to information made available by Kazeem Jenrade, the victim, upon regaining his freedom, reportedly recognised one of the suspected abductors and provided intelligence that enabled the security operatives to identify and apprehend him.

The escaped victim is said to be receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital following his ordeal.

The development has heightened concerns over the spate of kidnapping incidents reportedly affecting Baasi and neighbouring communities, with residents calling for more robust security measures to safeguard lives and property.

**Onibaasi Hands Over Suspect to Police**

The Onibaasi of Baasi, Oba Dr Sunday Azeez Babatunde Asunmo, confirmed the arrest, explaining that the victim’s ability to identify one of the alleged abductors was instrumental to the operation.

The monarch reportedly disclosed that the suspect resided within the same community as the victim, a circumstance that facilitated his identification and subsequent arrest following the information supplied to the security operatives.

After the operation, the traditional ruler handed the suspect over to the police in Atisbo Local Government Area for further investigation.

The arrest underscored the significance of collaboration among traditional institutions, community stakeholders and security formations in the fight against kidnapping and other criminal activities.

However, the suspect’s alleged involvement in the crime remains subject to police investigation, while the circumstances surrounding the abduction and possible links to other incidents in the area are yet to be established.

**Atisbo Chairman Raises Alarm Over Recurring Abductions**

The Chairman of Atisbo Local Government Council, Hon. Bashiru Olumuyiwa Alade, also confirmed the incident, expressing concern over recurring kidnapping incidents in Baasi and the attendant threat to the security and welfare of residents.

Alade explained that the disturbing security situation had informed the decision of the local government to expedite the establishment of a police security post in the community.

According to him, the recently commissioned police post is expected to enhance police presence, facilitate prompt responses to security breaches and strengthen efforts to prevent criminal activities within Baasi and its environs.

He expressed the hope that the facility would complement existing security arrangements and foster more effective collaboration between conventional law enforcement agencies and community-based security groups.

The council chairman’s remarks have further underscored the imperative of sustained investment in grassroots security infrastructure, particularly in communities that have experienced repeated cases of abduction.

**Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant**

The council chairman urged residents of Baasi and other communities across Atisbo Local Government Area to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to the police and other relevant security agencies.

He cautioned members of the public against resorting to self-help or taking the law into their own hands, emphasising that suspected criminal cases should be handled through established legal and investigative procedures.

Alade also commended the Onibaasi, community members and the various security groups involved in the operation for their cooperation, urging them to sustain the partnership in the collective interest of public safety.

He called for stronger synergy among traditional rulers, community leaders, residents and security agencies, noting that timely and credible information from the public could assist law enforcement authorities in preventing crime and apprehending suspected offenders.

The involvement of vigilante members, Amotekun, Iru Ekun and local hunters in the operation also highlights the role of community-based security structures in complementing the efforts of the police, particularly in rural communities.

Nevertheless, security stakeholders are expected to ensure that such collaborations operate within the confines of the law, with suspects handed over to the appropriate authorities for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the victim’s abduction, determine the extent of the arrested suspect’s alleged involvement and ascertain whether other individuals were connected to the incident.

The suspect remains innocent in the eyes of the law unless proven guilty by a competent court of jurisdiction.
