Race to Agodi Begins: Alli Declares for Oyo Governorship

The race for the Oyo State Government House in 2027 has begun to take shape following the formal declaration of Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District, to contest on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Alli, a seasoned figure within the APC and a prominent Ibadan high chief, unveiled his gubernatorial ambition on Friday at the Police Field in Yemetu, Ibadan North Local Government Area, in what political observers describe as a strategic early move to consolidate support within the party.

The declaration rally drew several prominent political figures, including Senator Yunus Akintunde, who represents Oyo Central Senatorial District, as well as members of the House of Representatives such as Akin Alabi, Aderemi Oseni, Akeem Adeyemi, Olafisoye Akinmoyede, and Tajudeen Abisodun. Former Deputy Governor Iyiola Oladokun, alongside other notable party stakeholders like Asiwaju Yemi Aderibigbe and Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, were also in attendance.

In his address, Alli also framed his ambition as a product of extensive political consultations and grassroots engagement, a move widely interpreted as an effort to demonstrate broad-based acceptance ahead of intra-party contests.

“After due consultations with critical stakeholders, traditional rulers, and party leaders, I have resolved to present myself for the governorship of Oyo State,” signaling readiness to enter what is expected to be a competitive APC primary.

Political analysts note that Alli’s entry could reshape the internal dynamics of the APC in Oyo State, particularly among Ibadan power blocs, where his traditional title as Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadanland may carry both symbolic and political weight.

He also leaned on his administrative and legislative track record, citing his tenure as Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government and later as Secretary to the State Government under the administration of former Governor Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja. His current position in the Senate, he added, has further amplified his advocacy on issues affecting Oyo State.

“I have served the state diligently in various capacities and ensured effective implementation of government policies. As a senator, I have consistently raised my voice in defense of the people,” he stated..
