Governor Seyi Makinde and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have reportedly zoned the deputy governorship position to Ogbomoso in Oyo North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the party disclosed that ,the move is part of strategic calculations to strengthen the PDP’s electoral prospects, particularly amid indications that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) may also pick a running mate from Ogbomoso.
Party insiders said the zoning arrangement is aimed at balancing political interests across the state’s geopolitical zones while consolidating support in Oyo North, a key voting bloc.
Although the PDP is yet to officially announce its governorship candidate, discussions within the party suggest that the choice of deputy governor may be influenced by religious considerations. If the party fields a Christian candidate for governor, Engr. Open Salawu might be considered as a possible running mate. Conversely, if a Muslim candidate emerges as the governorship flagbearer, Segun Ogunwuyi is said to be among those being weighed for the deputy governorship slot.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from party leadership were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. However, multiple sources insist that consultations are ongoing and that a final decision will be communicated in due course.
