Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari, representing Oyo North Senatorial District, appears to have found himself at the centre of an unexpected political comparison in neighbouring Kwara State.
Buhari has neither declared interest in Kwara politics nor openly criticised any senator from the state. Yet, his record of legislative interventions and constituency representation has become a reference point in a recent commentary on the performance of Kwara senators.
The comparison was made by Adetunbi Lawal, an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, who said he had followed Buhari’s activities and was impressed by his performance both on the floor of the Senate and in his oversight responsibilities.
Lawal, in a social media post, described Buhari’s record as including more than 200 federal job placements, cash support for business owners and other empowerment initiatives.
He said, “As an alumnus of the Better By Far University, the University of Ilorin, I have followed the activities of a fellow alumnus, Distinguished Senator Fatai Omotayo Buhari of Oyo North. On the floor of the Senate and in his oversight functions, he has performed excellently well with over 200 federal job placements, cash support for business owners, and many more.”
The significance of the comment lies not merely in the praise for Buhari but in the fact that his performance was presented as a benchmark for assessing legislative representation elsewhere.
Political observers note that such comparisons can create pressure for serving lawmakers, particularly when constituents begin measuring their representatives against what they perceive as the achievements of lawmakers in other constituencies.
Buhari has, over the years, been associated with interventions in employment facilitation, empowerment, business support and other constituency-focused initiatives.
His activities have also attracted recognition beyond Oyo North.
At the recent Ibadan Cultural Festival, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes honoured the senator with an Award of Excellence.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, also commended Buhari for extending empowerment and employment opportunities beyond his senatorial district to beneficiaries in Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State.
Ladoja described the senator as responsible, reliable, diligent and trustworthy, while noting that he was not given to making unnecessary noise about his achievements.
The developments have consequently broadened the conversation around Buhari’s style of representation, with supporters pointing to his interventions as evidence of a constituency-driven approach to legislative politics.
For the senator, however, the emerging comparison with lawmakers in another state may simply be an unintended consequence of the visibility of his interventions.
The episode also highlights an increasingly important aspect of legislative politics in Nigeria: constituents are becoming more interested in tangible outcomes such as employment opportunities, empowerment, business support, infrastructure and access to government programmes.
In that context, Buhari’s name has now entered a conversation beyond Oyo North—not because of a political confrontation with Kwara lawmakers, but because his record was cited as an example of what effective representation could look like.
For the Kwara senators, the development may present an uncomfortable question from their constituents: if another senator’s performance can become a benchmark, what measurable impact can they point to in their own constituencies?
