The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers captured in a viral video allegedly making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a member of the public during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
Addressing journalists on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the officers had been identified and taken into custody on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu.
The officers were identified as ASP Elomore Sodayo, Inspector Adefila Adewale, Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi, and Inspector Odusola Peter.
According to the PPRO, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the level of culpability of each officer involved.
Jimoh stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined and professional institution that does not tolerate misconduct, incivility, or any action capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division, or bringing the Force into disrepute.
“The officers are expected at all times to conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism, respect for human dignity, and in strict compliance with the Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures,” he said.
He assured the public that the investigation would be conducted with fairness, transparency, and accountability, adding that any officer found to have violated the ethics and standards of the Force would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-driven and community-oriented policing, urging residents to remain law-abiding and report cases of police misconduct through established complaint channels.
The viral video, which sparked widespread reactions on social media, allegedly showed police officers threatening and making ethnically charged remarks during a stop-and-search operation on the Lagos–Benin Expressway. The Command said the ongoing investigation is aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring accountability.
