Power Play in Lagos APC as Aspirants Scramble for Influence and Endorsements

Political activities within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have gathered momentum as aspirants intensify efforts to secure the party’s tickets ahead of forthcoming elections.

Across the state, party faithful and hopeful candidates are deploying various strategies to win the support of key leaders and influential stakeholders.

From high-level consultations and endorsements to increased grassroots mobilisation, the contest for party tickets has assumed a heightened level of urgency.

Party insiders say the race is becoming increasingly competitive, with aspirants leveraging political alliances, influence networks and public visibility to gain an edge over rivals.

Many are also said to be courting party elders and power brokers whose backing could prove decisive.

The intensity of the struggle was evident at the 90th birthday celebration of elder statesman and member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Chief Bushura Alebiosu, held on Saturday.

What was meant to be a private celebration turned into a political gathering, as aspirants and office holders used the occasion to showcase their relevance and connect with key stakeholders.

The event attracted prominent figures from across Lagos’ political landscape and beyond.

Speaking at the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Alebiosu as a symbol of integrity, service and enduring leadership.

He said the nonagenarian’s life reflects selfless dedication to societal progress and mentorship. “We are celebrating a true Nigerian who embodies the finest ideals of leadership, service and humanity. “At 90, Baba remains strong, vibrant and continues to inspire, offering guidance to leaders and communities.”

Sanwo-Olu noted that Alebiosu’s legacy is defined by decades of impact and unwavering commitment to people-oriented leadership.

Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, also lauded the elder statesman, describing him as a stabilising force and bridge-builder in Lagos politics.

“Baba has consistently provided guidance and direction, shaping political thought and fostering unity across divides,” he said.

Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Alhaja Samiat Bada, described Alebiosu as a pillar of the Greater Kosofe political structure and a dependable mentor.

Similarly, former Ogun State governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, hailed Alebiosu as a towering political figure whose journey from councillorship in Somolu to the Lagos State House of Assembly exemplifies decades of impactful service.

“As a member of the Governance Advisory Council, his contributions have strengthened democratic ideals and progressive politics,” Daniel said.

Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East senatorial district, also commended the celebrant, describing him as a symbol of resilience, integrity and enduring legacy, while former Senator Gbenga Ashafa praised him as a father figure and mentor whose influence transcends generations.

Other dignitaries at the event included former APC National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire; former deputy governor, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe; APC chieftain, James Odunbaku; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole and the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, among others.

Son of the celebrant and Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure, Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, expressed gratitude to guests for honouring his father, noting that he remains inspired by the elder statesman’s legacy.

His wife, Dr. Yemisi Bush-Alebiosu, also thanked attendees and prayed for continued good health and long life for the celebrant.

Observers say the convergence of political heavyweights and aspirants at the event underscores the growing intensity of the APC ticket race in Lagos, with the coming weeks expected to witness even more strategic alignments and political manoeuvring.
