Vice-Chancellor of Mercy Medical University, Iwo in Osun State, Prof. Ibrahim Sule, has warned students against collecting money from “yahoo boys,” saying it could expose them to danger and untimely death.
The VC, who lamented that many of them are ritualists moving around campuses, also warned male students against involving in internet fraud.
Speaking at the university’s third matriculation ceremony, the VC urged students to be careful in their actions and movements, and to avoid misconduct that could jeopardize their future.
He also assured parents that the university is committed to providing a conducive environment for learning, innovation, and personal development.
“We have done everything necessary to ensure you have a conducive and safe environment. We are pleading to you not to collect money from unknown men. The boys among you should also avoid engaging in internet fraud. This university has zero tolerance for indiscipline,” Prof. Sule said.
A public health professor, Abubakar Halliru, delivered a lecture titled, “Emotional intelligence as a panacea to medical education and practice.” He urged students to develop empathy by putting themselves in the position of their patients.
He supported the incorporation of emotional intelligence into the medical curriculum as a key part of clinical development.
Halliru also urged students to maintain good relationships and conduct.
The Chancellor, Ambassador Ahmed Musa Ibeto, warned that the university authorities would be firm against any form of anti-social behaviour found on campus. He cautioned students engaging in or planning to engage in activities such as secret cults, extortion, intimidation, and prostitution.
He said such students should either change and pursue a path of rectitude or be shown the way out.
Ibeto urged over 1,000 matriculating students to uphold good behaviour.
