An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Obadara Segun, has died after being shot during a suspected kidnapping incident in Àgó-Àrẹ, a community in ATISBO LGA of Oyo State.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday evening, has heightened fresh concerns over insecurity in the Òkè Ògún region, where residents have reported a rise in abductions and violent crimes.
According to local sources, the assailants opened fire during the incident, leaving Mr. Segun critically injured. He was immediately evacuated to BMC Hospital, Saki, where medical personnel battled to save his life. However, he was pronounced dead on Saturday afternoon.
The late Segun, an indigene of the Òkè Ògún area, was based in Àgó Àrẹ and worked with INEC in Saki West prior to his death.
Residents who spoke on the condition of anonymity described the incident as both shocking and deeply unsettling, calling for urgent intervention by security agencies to stem the tide of violence in the area.
“This is becoming too frequent. People are no longer safe,” one resident said, reflecting a growing sense of fear among locals.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not confirmed any arrests or provided further details about efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
