Tribute: Remembering Alhaji Lamidi Onaolapo Adesina Legacy by Barrister Akeem Agbaje

As we remember Alhaji Lam Adesina today, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact he has had on the lives of many, both as a leader and as a mentor. His legacy is deeply rooted in the history of Oyo State and in the hearts of all who admired his dedication, wisdom, and undying love for the people. Chief Lam was an Icon of democratic values, someone who fearlessly confronted oppression and stood up for justice in Nigeria’s toughest times.

Serving as the governor of Oyo State from 1999 to 2003, Alhaji Lam demonstrated what it means to govern with integrity and compassion. He was not only a leader but a “Friend of the Masses” a title he rightfully earned by prioritizing the welfare of the people above all else. His administration championed improvements in education, health, and rural development, initiatives that brought tangible change to the lives of Oyo residents. His commitment to providing accessible education and healthcare, along with his work to uplift rural communities, was a testament to his belief in a just and equitable society.

Beyond his role as governor, Chief Lam’s influence as a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) is a legacy of courage and resilience. He, alongside other patriots, resisted the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha, even enduring imprisonment and persecution. Alhaji Lam’s strength and integrity in these struggles remains a source of inspiration for me. His legacy reminds me that true leadership requires sacrifice, and that we must never compromise on principles, even in the face of adversity.

Chief Lam’s mentorship went far beyond policy or political strategy, direct or indirectly, we learnt from him the value of empathy, honesty, and unyielding commitment to the people we serve. Today, as I reflect on his life, I am reminded of the ideals he held dear and the example he set for us all.

Alhaji Lam Adesina’s legacy is one that will forever inspire those of us who seek to follow in his footsteps. His life and service are a reminder of the power of selflessness and dedication to the greater good, and I am honored to have learned from him. May his memory continue to inspire us toward a brighter and more just future for Oyo State.
