Nigeria’s sporting and political communities have been thrown into mourning following the death of former Flying Eagles coach and prominent grassroots politician, Hon. Kehinde Adewuyi Adetola, popularly known as “Coach Kenny.”
The late Adetola, a respected son of Saki in Oyo State and a chieftain of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), was renowned for his immense contributions to football development, youth empowerment, and community service.
Sources disclosed that the respected sports administrator and politician passed away after a brief illness, bringing to an end a life dedicated to football development, public service, and youth empowerment .
His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from former players, political associates, community leaders, and admirers who described him as an exceptional leader, mentor, and advocate for youth development.
He was the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Saki West State Constituency seat in the 2023 general election before later joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he became a party chieftain.
As a former coach of Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, Coach Kenny played a pivotal role in nurturing young football talents and contributing to the growth of the nation’s football legacy. His passion for grassroots sports development earned him widespread admiration within the sporting fraternity, while many young athletes benefitted from his guidance and mentorship.
Beyond his accomplishments in football, Adetola distinguished himself in public service. He served as Vice Chairman of Saki West Local Government Area, where he was credited with initiating and supporting programmes aimed at community development, youth inclusion, and social advancement.
Known for his accessibility and commitment to public welfare, he remained actively involved in grassroots politics and community engagement through his role in the Allied Peoples Movement. Associates recalled his ability to unite people across political divides and his unwavering dedication to the progress of his community.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across OkeOgun and beyond, with many describing the late politician and sports administrator as “a father to the fatherless, a mentor to countless youths, and a patriot whose service left an enduring mark on society.”
One tribute noted that “Coach Kenny was more than a leader; he was a symbol of hope and inspiration. His contributions to sports, governance, and youth development will remain indelible in the history of Oke Ogun and Oyo State.”
As news of his passing continues to reverberate across the country, many have reflected on his remarkable legacy of leadership, humility, and selfless service.
