Contrary to reports circulating on social media that residents abducted by suspected kidnappers in Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, have regained their freedom, credible sources in the community have disclosed that the victims remain in captivity, ITV Online can authoritatively report
The clarification came amid heightened tension in the town following an ultimatum issued on Saturday by Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to Fulani community leaders over the rising wave of kidnappings in the area.
A video that went viral on social media showed Igboho addressing a gathering of Fulani leaders, traditional authorities and security officials at the palace of the Alepata of Igboholand, Oba Joel Olawuwo, where he demanded urgent action to secure the release of the abducted residents.
Sources familiar with the situation told our correspondent that, as of the time of filing this report, the victims had not been released despite claims suggesting otherwise.
According to the sources, efforts are still ongoing to secure their freedom, while family members continue to await positive developments.
During the meeting, Igboho reportedly issued a two-hour ultimatum to Fulani leaders in the community, insisting that the abductees be released and warning that continued incidents of kidnapping could trigger unrest.
Speaking in Yoruba, the activist accused some members of the Fulani community of complicity in a series of abductions that have unsettled residents in recent months.
He specifically referenced the reported kidnapping of a pregnant woman, her sister and a child a few days ago, alleging that criminal elements operating within the area had become increasingly emboldened.
“You cannot be kidnapping people in our land. You kidnapped a pregnant woman, demanded ransom and killed the person who brought the ransom. In my fatherland! You are not even afraid of me. Let this be the last and the end,” he was heard saying in the viral video.
The development has sparked concerns among residents, many of whom have expressed fears over the deteriorating security situation in the agrarian community.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the commencement of an investigation into the threats contained in the video.
The command said it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and urged residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to carry out their responsibilities.
Police authorities also reiterated their commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
As of press time, there was no official statement confirming the release of the abducted victims, while security operatives were said to be intensifying efforts to secure their rescue.
