The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), has approved the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
According to the university’s spokesperson, Habib Yakoob, the appointment was announced during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on December 31, 2024. It takes effect on January 1, 2025, and is for a non-renewable five-year tenure.
Following the university’s regulations, Professor Maikudi emerged as the best candidate among 10 shortlisted individuals interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board. She is Nigeria’s youngest Professor of Law and the first female Professor of Law from Northwest Nigeria.
Born on 31st January 1983 in Katsina State, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi is a distinguished scholar of International Law.
With an impressive academic background, including an LLB degree from the University of Reading, UK, and a PhD from the University of Abuja, Professor Maikudi is well-equipped for the position. She will also be the first female Vice-Chancellor in the university’s 38 years history.
Before her confirmation, Professor Maikudi served as the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, first appointed on June 26, 2024. However, the appointment process had been marred by controversy, with 67 professors submitting a protest letter to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, regarding allegations against the selection process.
