Efforts to strengthen grassroots security and community policing in Oyo State received a significant boost on Tuesday as the Chairman of Saki West LGA, Hon. Gbenga Olaleye Akinola, commissioned a new operational base for the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, along the Ago-Aare Road in Saki.
The commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, security chiefs, community leaders, religious stakeholders, and residents, who gathered to witness what was described as a major milestone in the local government’s drive to enhance public safety and protect lives and property.
Speaking at the event, Akinola said the project reflected his administration’s determination to strengthen the security architecture of Saki West and provide adequate support for security agencies operating within the area.
“Today marks yet another milestone in our administration’s commitment to the security and well-being of the people of Saki West Local Government,this project was conceived and executed as part of deliberate efforts to strengthen security, enhance surveillance, and provide a conducive operational base for the Amotekun Corps in safeguarding our communities.”
He stressed that ,security remains the bedrock of sustainable development, noting that no society can achieve meaningful progress in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
“As a government, we recognise that security is the foundation upon which sustainable development rests. No society can achieve meaningful progress in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. It is for this reason that we have continued to invest in initiatives and infrastructure that support security agencies and promote peace across our local government,” he stated.
Describing the facility as more than just a physical structure, Akinola said the security post symbolises the government’s resolve to create a safer environment for residents, farmers, traders, students, investors and visitors.
“This Amotekun Security Post is not merely a building; it is a symbol of our determination to protect lives and property, support law enforcement efforts, and create a safer environment for all residents of Saki West,” he said.
The council chairman also lauded Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritising security and supporting the growth of the Amotekun Corps across the state.
“I wish to express my profound appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for his unwavering commitment to the security of Oyo State and for creating an enabling environment for local governments to contribute meaningfully to community security,” he added.
Akinola commended officers and personnel of the Amotekun Corps for their dedication and sacrifices in maintaining peace and order, urging those who would be deployed to the new facility to uphold professionalism, discipline and respect for the rule of law.
“The people look up to you for protection, and I am confident that you will continue to discharge your responsibilities diligently,” he told the operatives.
The chairman further acknowledged the support of the Traditional Council, led by the Okere of Sakiland, as well as religious leaders, community organisations, market associations, youth groups and political stakeholders for their contributions to peace and development in the local government.
He also called on residents to continue supporting security agencies through vigilance and timely information sharing.
“Security is a collective responsibility, and together we can build a safer and more prosperous society,” he said.
Earlier, stakeholders at the event commended the LG chairman for investing in security infrastructure, describing the project as a practical demonstration of responsive governance and a valuable contribution to community development.
The Chairman of Saki Parapo Home Branch, in his goodwill message, congratulated the Local government on the successful completion of the project and expressed optimism that ,the facility would strengthen efforts to combat crime and improve emergency response within the area.
Representatives of various security agencies attended the ceremony, underscoring the collaborative approach being adopted to address security challenges across Oyo State.
Those present included the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Osubanjo Kehinde; a representative of the Department of State Services, Bayo Ogundere; Commanding Officer, Captain F. O. Fatoyinbo; Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps official, Afolabi George; Area Commander of Police, DSP Brigadier Jimoh; Federal Road Safety Corps representative, Raji Adesina; and the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Adeoye G. S.
Also in attendance were the Vice Chairman and Political Head of Asabari LCDA, Hon. Abdulraman Oyedokun Tirimisiyu; Secretary to the LGA, Kolade Ojelabi Ojo; Chief of Staff, Oladeji Oluwaseun; members of the legislative council; political leaders; and community stakeholders.
Residents and community leaders expressed confidence that ,the new Amotekun base would improve surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities, thereby helping to curb criminal activities and strengthen security across Saki West and neighbouring communities.
The commissioning aligns with the broader security agenda of the Oyo State Govt. which has continued to expand the operational capacity of the Amotekun Corps as a grassroots security network across the state.
