President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a N15 billion take-off grant to support its development.
The approval, announced on Monday in a State House press release signed by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, is in line with provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021. The law provides for the expansion of the academy—currently headquartered in Wudil, Kano State into a multi-campus institution to meet growing national security and training demands.
According to the statement, the N15 billion intervention fund will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund). The funds are earmarked for critical infrastructure, including academic buildings, student hostels, and essential training facilities.
The decision to site the new campus in Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders in the education and security sectors. Participants included the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The meeting evaluated factors such as projected student intake, available funding, quality assurance standards, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing recruitment expansion.
President Tinubu said the initiative is aimed at strengthening institutional governance, enhancing modern policing education, and improving national security architecture.
The new campus is expected to increase training capacity and provide a more regionally balanced approach to police education across the country.
