A coalition of youths in Oyo State has accused former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, of actions capable of deepening divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and disrespecting traditional and political institutions in the state.
The group, operating under the banner of the Oyo Concerned Youth Coalition, made the allegations in a statement issued after a meeting held in Ibadan on Wednesday evening.
According to the coalition, Adelabu’s recent political activities following his exit from office have generated tension within the party and raised concerns among stakeholders ahead of future elections in the state.
The youths alleged that after what they described as a stalled political campaign, the former minister resorted to making threats through some of his associates. They also referenced comments allegedly made during a recent endorsement gathering in his local government area.
The coalition further claimed that supporters at the event made remarks deemed disrespectful to the traditional institution in Ibadanland as well as senior APC leaders in Oyo State.
Describing the development as dangerous to party cohesion, the group said Adelabu’s conduct could destabilise the opposition party if not addressed.
“Since obtaining the APC nomination form, Chief Adelabu’s actions have consistently fostered division within the party, reflecting an attitude of ‘if it is not me, the party must scatter,’” the statement read.
The coalition also accused the former minister of engaging in political alignments inconsistent with his previous positions and alliances within the state’s political landscape.
The group urged Adelabu to focus on presenting his policy agenda and account for his performance during his tenure as Minister of Power instead of engaging in what it described as divisive politics.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, spokesperson Damola Agbaje said members of the group would support any candidate endorsed by party elders for the APC ticket, except Adelabu.
“We will not support Chief Adebayo Adelabu’s ambition. We remain committed to the candidate endorsed by our elders, provided it is not him,” Agbaje said.
The coalition concluded by calling for unity, discipline and respect for political and traditional institutions as political activities intensify ahead of forthcoming elections in Oyo State.
