The Oke-Ogun Development Consultative Forum (ODCF) has cautioned political actors in Oyo State against coercion, intimidation, and divisive rhetoric, urging them to uphold democratic principles amid rising political activities in the state.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Prince Remi Adegbola, the apex socio-cultural body representing the Oke-Ogun region said it was compelled to speak following a review of ongoing political discourse.
“The Oke-Ogun Consultative Forum, after a comprehensive review of ongoing political discourse and activities within Oyo State, wishes to formally caution political actors on utterances and actions that undermine Oke-Ogun as a region and her citizens in the course of pursuing political aspirations,” the statement read.
The Forum stressed that rotational leadership remains a stabilising framework in a plural society, warning against any form of political superiority or dominance.
“It is the considered position of the Forum that the principle of rotational leadership, anchored on fairness, justice, equity, equality, and inclusivity, remains one of the most stabilising frameworks for sustainable democratic governance. Politicians who brandish a self-acclaimed superiority should have a rethink and be cultured.”
Highlighting the importance of inclusion, the group noted that democracy cannot thrive where imbalance persists.
“Democracy, by its nature, thrives on inclusion and balance. Any system that perpetuates exclusion or dominance by one section over others risks deepening political tension and eroding public trust in governance .Fair rotation of power is not a privilege but a moral and political necessity for lasting unity and development.”
The Forum declared its support for growing calls that political power should shift to the Oke-Ogun axis, citing equity and historical contribution.
“In this regard, the ODCF strongly aligns with the growing call that power should rotate to the Oke-Ogun axis of Ọ̀yọ́ State (‘Oke-Ogun lo kan’), in recognition of the historical contributions, demographic relevance, and enduring commitment of the region. “The Forum firmly rejects any position that seeks to permanently centralise or retain political power within a single region.”
The group also raised concerns over alleged intimidation of members of Egbe Ajosepo Fun Itesiwaju Gbogbo Wa, describing such actions as provocative.
“ODCF expresses serious concern over reports of maltreatment, intimidation, and undue harassment of members who have consistently and peacefully advocated for the legitimate demand that political power should rotate to the Oke-Ogun axis. Those behind such barbaric action are given stern warning not to stir undue violence.”
Condemning political victimisation, the Forum called for restraint and respect for constitutional rights.
“ODCF firmly condemns any form of victimisation targeted at citizens or groups merely for expressing political opinion within the bounds of constitutional rights. We call on all relevant authorities, stakeholders, and political actors within Oyo State to be mature, civilised, and tolerant.”
Reaffirming its commitment to unity, the group urged all stakeholders to support a peaceful transition process.
“In conclusion, ODCF reaffirms its commitment to a united, peaceful, and progressive Oyo State where no region is marginalised and where leadership rotation reflects the collective aspirations of all stakeholders. We urge all well-meaning sons and daughters of the State to support a peaceful and structured transition anchored on fairness, equity, and justice.”
